Eutelsat snags carrier license in Australia

Eutelsat, a satellite operator based in France, announced that it had secured a carrier license from the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and revealed plans of entering the Australian market with the launch of a new satellite to cover the land down under.

Eutelsat 70B is one of six new satellites under construction for the company’s fleet expansion, expected to provide coverage in Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia, while slated for a launch by the end of the year. The vessel will be equipped with four regional beams to 48 Ku band transponders, and will provide high frequency re-use.

The satellite fleet expansion has a launch period from 2012 to 2015. The French satellite operator is looking into tapping in the increased demand for satellite broadband access, GSM backhauling, fixed and mobile telecommunications services across the globe.

Features of Satellite Broadband

Bandwidth pertains to the amount of data that is sent and received by ISPSs and satellite broadband companies. This amount is measured in terms of megabits per second, or roughly one million bits per second.

There are approximately 300 satellites located on a fixed geostationary orbit, just above Earth’s equator, with 2-3 degrees distance in between. These satellites move withthe world at the same speed. Ground stations can locate geostationary satellites at a fixed location relative to the globe’s equator.

Three things should be carefully considered when evaluating the capacity of satellite carriers: downlink EIRP power (dBW), transponder bandwidth (MHz), uplink G/T (dBK) and sensitivity (dBW/^m2), which is bought by ISPs and satellite operators.
