Proactive CEO Bullish on Australia’s Teleport and Satellite Industry
The 2012 NewSat Satellite Seminar, held at the company’s South Australian Teleport facility, has attracted 50 industry leaders from defence, government and satellite communications sectors. The participants gained insights on industry trends and growth prospects of the Australian market. Australia is poised to become a major global player in the satellite service market given its secure and unique communications networks and facilities.

Marc Legare, chief executive officer of US-based Proactive Communications, discussed how the defence sector is fuelling the growth of the global satellite communications market. Legare noted that the competitive edge of the Australian satellite industry lies in the country’s geopolitical status, safe environment and availability of satellite infrastructures with global coverage. Proactive Communications has partnered with NewSat to provide satellite communications services for the US armed forces deployed in the Middle East.
Legare pointed out that satellite Internet plays a critical role in offshore military and defence operations. Proactive’s Middle East operations are backed by reliable mobile Internet via NewSat teleports. Foreign military bases need mobile Internet connectivity for critical voice communication, intelligence research and also for the improvement of the moral welfare of the army. Satellite connectivity allows all personnel in foreign operations base sites to respond promptly to the calls of camp commander and their respective service units. Medical personnel, electricians and emergency support group rely on satellites to effectively carry out their duties in foreign sites.
In most military operations sites where cable Internet is not available, satellite dishes are the only option to get wireless Internet connection, said Legare. He sees Australia as a strong teleport partner for Middle East operations given the geographic and economic advantages of the country.
Legare predicts that there would be a stronger demand for military satellite communications to enable improved data fusion, knowledge management and intelligence operations. These trends are likely to be seen in 2016, he said.
